Selkath Sith Lord, WIP #2/Initial Sketch

I wasn't feeling all that good about my first composition/sketch (here: http://swagonline.net/node/3343). So, more sketching and finally it's all coming together somewhat:

More Force Wave/Scream action + debris (whee!). Robes sorta coming together. Values sorta figured out. More emphasis on female-ness of the character (but yeah, she has a big head, all selkath Sith lords are like that). Et-cetera.

Things will probably still change here and there, but for the most part, this is the one that's going to final. I'll be detailing head and hands, but will play it nice and loose in other areas. Should be done towards the end of next week.

(Feels weird talking to myself.)

Edit:

Added a peek into the messy planning process for whoever will find it useful: (A) quickie study sketches, (B) developed some a smidgen and picked one out, (C) flipped it around to see if it's reading right (pose, light, etc), (D) rough composition guide using some neato golden ratio thingie.

Not bad so far. One suggestion though. Get rid of the breasts. This is an amphibian/fish-person, not a mammal. As for the "large" head, that isn't a big deal since all Selkath have large heads.

Gith

Hi Tramp,

Thanks for stopping by for a peek.

We're tackling just the generalities of the picture at this point, but I do understand about the "chest". So, verily, there shall be no breasts, just breastplates... which may or may not imply human female parts, but then again it's really the hips that communicate gender the most here. I think it's really neat that Lord Crumb (who made the request) described the character as female. I feel it adds that extra bit of slinky mystique/horror/deadliness to the whole idea.

And, I was just kidding about the head size (I tend to waffle and complain a lot when I'm in this stage). I do think it's just about right.

Also, final size will be about, say, twice the above. I usually start out just this small then resize as I go along.

Ghost,

Fantastic stuff, I love how rich it feels with stuff everywhere. Are you going to stick with a primarily gray composition? or color it more? I really liked the previous color. It looks like it's coming together nicely, I can't wait to see the final.

I'M LOVING IT! :-)
The way it is coming together, you truly get the feeling that Sharshea is using the Dark Side of the Force in this piece and the hatred is boiling over. Hope I am not out of place, but if you could add a little bit of the dark red back with the grey. I will bow to your expertise if you decide not to do so. Lord Crumb is humble :-)

Gith

Hey thanks, guys. The comments are much appreciated.

Are you going to stick with a primarily gray composition? or color it more? I really liked the previous color.

Eclipse: Yeah, I was digging the first color scheme too, until I realized that I actually didn't quite know where to take it from there. That's an odd thing to say, but yeah -- I sort of felt like I jump-started too soon, got too groovy with the colors and started loosing the big picture. I feel a bit more confident taking the latest sketch/plan to a final piece.

Color-wise, I think it will be largely monochromatic (except for key areas here and there, like the eye for example). I'm still undecided if it's going to be a warm scheme (fiery reds/yellows) or a cool one (electric blues/greens). If you look at pictures of explosions, you get the sense that a blast will just light everything up, drench everything in one hue, with really strong shadows, and washing most of the other colors out. Sorta. That said...

...if you could add a little bit of the dark red back with the grey.

Lord Crumb: Hey, what's life without dark red? I'm definitely planning to add some Sith-ish color in there... perhaps a red-violet... not quite sure yet, but something of that sorts definitely going to be in there.

I think you hit it on the head with the "hatred boiling over" comment. Above all, that's the one thing I'd really love to keep/enhance as I move out of the planning stage and set up to work toward the final -- which may not be until next week (crossing my fingers that I find the time before my self-imposed deadline; life looks busy).

...he really makes the leap from 'Illustration' to 'Art'

Heh. I'm a complete hack, believe me. (But thanks.)

Happy Thanksgiving, all.

Ghost,

ACK! The fibonacci spiral diagram is totally sweet! I love it when art and math work so well together. Did you design with that in mind? or did you just get to looking at it and realize that you had subconsciously done that? Anyway, great stuff there.

I like the whole idea of the color wash "explosion". You always do such amazing work I feel really stupid even venturing an opinion. lol I was just asking if it was going to stay primarily gray, which the answer seems to be "No" so. That's all I wanted to know. Great work, I can't wait to see the final. How are you liking the blog feature?

I AM TOTALLY PSYCHED! Ghost ITH, you are truly a great artist. I do like idea of adding subtle red accents to the piece. It will certainly give it that sith-ish look to it. I am eager to see your finally piece :)

"Get rid of the breasts. This is an amphibian/fish-person, not a mammal."

Just as a point of reference, from Wookiepedia & "The Art of Star Wars Ep III":

Personally, when doing artwork, I try to keep in mind the world you are "working" in. SW is Fantasy/Sci-fi. So the rules that ground us in our world can sometimes be thrown out of the window to accomodate a design that reads well or works. By the female Mon Cal design it appears Lucas doesn't have a problem with SW amphibians sporting pronounced "breast-plates", so I don't think GIH's original design is too unreasonable.

Just my two cents of course.

It's Star Wars Hish....SELLICONE!

Guess they were mining more than Kolto down on Manaan.

Hey, folks. Thanks, etc...

ACK! The fibonacci spiral diagram is totally sweet! Did you design with that in mind? or did you just get to looking at it and realize that you had subconsciously done that?

Eclipse: Funky how that happens, no? As to whether it was consciously or unconsciously done... hmm... maybe a little of both.

Bob, Hish: Or in the case of our fishy friend up there, "sithicone"?.. Oh, alright. Terrible joke. Please don't sic Nibs on me.
